It all began back in 1910 in Beirut, Lebanon. Refai Alasmar then only 17 years old had a dream and strong determination. As the land in various parts of the country were reclaimable for agricultural production Rafai decided to grow several different crops resulting in successful harvests of fruits and vegetables. Refai then proceeded to create a small outdoor stand at the public open market to be able to sell his fresh produce to the local community and thus started to fulfil his dreams of great success. In 1935, Refai’s son, Mustafa, at the age of 11 years old, although very young at the time, wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. His father meticulously taught the young Mustafa the fundamentals of his business. With much loyalty and determination, Mustafa helped his father operate the business and then took over completely. Mustafa’s goal was to keep the legacy growing strong and continue the tradition. In 1956, Mustafa’s son, Sami Alasmar, continued the legacy that his father and grand-father had passed onto him. However, Sami had much greater goals and prospects set for himself and future generations to come. He made the decision to part from his family and set out for Canada to broaden his horizons and pursue his dream. Upon arriving in Canada in 1973, Sami immediately opened a small outdoor fruits and vegetables stand at the Jean-Talon Market. With Sami’s perseverance and determination, the small stand soon became a 600 square foot store, then, in a short period of time, developed into an 8,000 square foot store. In 1981, the tradition passed on from father to son once again. Sami Alasmar resolved to teach his son, Sami Taleb Jr. the ins and outs of the fruits and vegetable business. Though still a student at the time, Sami Taleb Jr., would go to the store on weekends to learn all there is to know about this venture created by his ancestors. Sami Taleb Jr. grew to appreciate the industry and quickly became devoted to it. He soon joined forces with his father and contributed all his efforts and enabled the business to grow on an even larger scale. In 1990, in addition to the store, which was already very successful, the idea of opening a warehouse was very attractive to Sami Taleb Jr and his father. Owning a warehouse would mean they could purchase merchandise in larger quantities, store it and then supply their store at the Jean-Talon Market. The volume would then enable them to sell their produce at competitive prices. They searched for the perfect location and soon found a 14,000 square foot facility. A strong demand and the increasing number of new customers have led them to expand their warehouse to 70,000 square feet, therefrom becoming the Sami T.A. Fruits Inc. that we know it today. Through the years the company has continued it’s steady growth. This growth is due in part to quality products, new business relationships, skilled and professional employees, the loyalty of their customers and most of all the willpower and determination of four generations of young people fully dedicated to their family business and to their customer’s satisfaction. And there lies the key to Sami T.A. Fruits’ phenomenal success..
